What’s the Purpose of Y1 Padel?
What’s the Purpose of Y1 Padel?

If you’ve ever looked at a sports brand and thought, “Cool… but who is this actually for?” - same.

A lot of brands build from the top down: sign the biggest name, sell the dream, and hope the rest of the world fits into whatever product trickles down.

Y1 exists to do it differently. We’re building from the community up - making padel rackets for every ability level and playing style, not just the elite few. And we’re doing it while taking sustainability seriously (like… spreadsheets and measurements, not just vibes).

Here’s the purpose, straight up, using the five questions you came for.

1) Why does Y1 exist?

Because the “traditional” sports brand blueprint is a bit backwards.

The old model goes:

  1. Sign the best athlete in the world
  2. Make the product for them
  3. Everyone else gets… a watered-down version and a big marketing poster

But we’re living in a different era now.

Today, we can:

  • talk to our community instantly (globally)
  • get real feedback fast
  • meet athletes in person weekly (especially in the UK, our home turf)
  • build products based on what real people actually need

So Y1 exists to answer a simple question:

What does a sports brand look like when it builds from the bottom up?

One where a beginner athlete matters as much as an elite athlete - not in a fluffy way, but in the way we design, test, and refine every racket.

2) What problem is Y1 solving?

Two big ones:

A) Most athletes are underserved

Let’s be honest: the majority of people playing padel are not in the world’s top tier - and yet most product attention still goes there first.

We want to change that by creating a range that genuinely respects:

  • beginners who need forgiveness and confidence
  • intermediates who need consistency and control
  • advanced athletes who want precision and performance

B) Padel is already for everyone - we just love making it even more welcoming

Padel’s genuinely one of the most open, friendly sports out there. That’s part of the magic. The community is a big reason athletes fall in love with it so quickly - and to be fair, loads of clubs and brands have done a great job of keeping that vibe alive.

Where Y1 fits in is simple: we’re obsessed with the people side of the sport.
We love turning up, meeting athletes, hearing what they really think (the good, the bad, and the “mate… this racket feels like a frying pan”), and then going away and delivering something that makes them go:

“Yes. That’s exactly what I was after.”

Nothing gives us more joy than helping padel feel even more accessible - whether that happens through:

  • Content that introduces someone to padel who’s never even heard of it before
  • Events that make it easier to try padel solo, especially if none of your mates are up for it yet (because turning up alone shouldn’t feel weird)
  • Products built from real feedback, including the niche stuff where someone says:
“No one’s made this yet, but I’d love a racket that does X for Y reason.”
And we go, “Cool. Let’s build it.”

And that’s also why we partner with event organisers and community projects we genuinely believe in. If you’re:

  • bringing new people into the sport
  • making padel more accessible
  • creating something fresh and positive for the community

…we want to get involved.

Whether that’s supporting padel for underserved groups, helping new parents get back into sport, or backing initiatives that remove barriers to entry - we’re in. Because the best part of padel isn’t just how it’s played.

It’s the spaces it creates.

And seeing athletes enjoy those spaces - and the products that come out of them — is the whole point.

3) What does Y1 stand for?

Two things we don’t shut up about (for good reason):

Community

We want to build the biggest community padel brand we can - and we mean that in practical terms:

  • weekly centre visits
  • rackets in athletes’ hands constantly
  • feedback recorded, tracked, and used
  • products shaped by how people really play

“Community-built” can sound like a buzzword. Our version looks more like showing up, handing out prototypes, and listening properly.

Sustainability

We believe it’s our responsibility to grow without pretending the planet is optional.

That’s why we take a measured, science-led approach to sustainability:

  • we measure emissions across the business (operations, travel, production, shipping-everything we can account for)
  • we work with carbon consultants (Carbon Jacked) to offset what we emit
  • and we operate as a verified carbon neutral company

Not perfect. Not preachy. Just intentional.

4) How does purpose guide decisions?

Purpose isn’t a slogan. It’s a filter.

Sustainability decisions: facts first, not fluffy promises

We don't say things like:

  • “we’ll plant a tree for every purchase”
  • “we’re eco-friendly”
  • “we care”

We’re not here to criticise that - doing something is better than doing nothing.

But our approach is:

  1. measure what we emit
  2. understand where the impact comes from
  3. choose the best trade-off decision with eyes open
  4. offset responsibly

That means sometimes we choose “slower but better” options.

Example:

sea freight can take ~3 months, which is a cashflow headache for a growing company - but it can be a trade-off we choose because it aligns with our sustainability goals as long as we plan properly.

Community decisions: build with athletes, not around athletes

Being customer-first isn’t about saying “we love you guys” on Instagram.

It’s about doing the work:

  • testing rackets at every level
  • making the range easier to understand
  • designing for different styles (not just “this is the pro racket, good luck”)

Purpose guides decisions when it forces you to answer:

“Who is this decision for?”
and
“What does this decision cost - financially, socially, environmentally?”

5) How does purpose affect products?

This is where it gets real.

Many brands:

  • put 90% effort into the elite product
  • then create “lower spec” versions for everyone else

Y1’s aim:

  • put proper effort into rackets for beginners and intermediates
  • while still building elite-level tools for high-performance athletes

Because if most of the community sits outside the “world top whatever,” then building for them isn’t a side quest - it’s the main mission.

What “purpose-built” looks like in product terms

It means we’re thinking about:

  • confidence and forgiveness (so new athletes improve faster)
  • stability and comfort (so intermediate athletes get consistent)
  • precision and performance (so advanced athletes can be ruthless)

And it means we prototype like mad:

  • weekly testing
  • structured feedback
  • iteration loops (not “launch it and pray”)

Purpose affects products when it changes what you optimise for.

Not just “what wins trophies,” but “what helps more athletes love padel for longer.”

Conclusion: Purpose is the whole point

Y1 exists because we don’t believe padel should be built only for the top of the pyramid.

We’re building a community-first brand that:

  • listens obsessively
  • designs for every level
  • and grows with sustainability as a real constraint, not a marketing theme

If you’re part of the community - beginner, intermediate, or chasing elite performance - you’re not an afterthought. You’re the blueprint.
